Reverse Appliqué T-shirt – Making Fun Clothes For Boys 1

making fun clothes boys

Why do boys’ clothes have to be so boring? My 5-year-old loves colours and so do other boys, I’m sure, yet the clothes available for them are often so dull.

This t-shirt I made using the reverse appliqué technique. I first stencilled a design onto the fabric, sewed around each shape with embroidery thread and then cut the shapes out to show the fabric underneath.

Many more examples of how to beautify plain jerseys with appliqué can be found in the book  Alabama Studio Sewing + Design.

The green fabric is organic cotton jersey, the pink is a bamboo and organic cotton mix (wonderfully soft, but only available in white) from Organic Textile Company.

You can find long sleeve shirt patterns in most colder months issues of Ottobre magazine, the only magazine I know of dedicated to sewing children’s clothes. It comes out 4 times a year and covers all ages. I bought a couple of them a few years ago and have used them again and again.

This is the start of my series making fun clothes for boys, I will show more clothes for boys in the months to come.
